Red Clay

Red claySuffering from acne and ugly breakouts? Red  Clay is used primarily to regenerate skin texture and promotes the renewal of skin cells. It's one of the best ways to treat pimples and acne naturally. It rids the complexion of blackheads, toning the skin, and re-balancing dry, flaky skin with regular use.

What is Red Clay?

Red clay comes from ancient deposits in the fertile Atlas Mountains of Morocco, mined from deposits made by volcanic activity and geothermic changes in the soil. Its use in history as a cosmetic clay can be traced back to ancient Rome and Egypt where it was used by nobility to tone and enrich the skin.

Moroccan Red Clay has been used for the last 1400 years as a soap, shampoo, and skin conditioner. Luxuriantly smooth to the touch, its highly absorbent and exfoliating qualities make this clay a must-have in top notch professional spas.

How is it used for?

Moroccan red clay is used today as a facial mask to nourish the skin, even out blotchy skin tone, and reduce acne – specifically stubborn blackheads. There are many clinical studies that have found this type of clay to be effective for increasing skin elasticity due to its high silica and magnesium content. It is so good for your skin, you can even swap out your soap with it as it won’t strip the skin of its natural oils.

Red Clay Mask Benefits

As mentioned, a red clay face mask works wonders for your skin, provided it is used regularly. Here are some of its advantages - take a look:

No more blackheads

Blackheads form when a clog or plug develops in the opening of hair follicles in your skin. Each follicle contains one hair and a sebaceous gland that produces oil. This oil, called sebum, helps keep your skin soft. Dead skin cells and oils collect in the opening to the skin follicle, producing a bump.  When skin over the bump opens, exposure to the air causes it to look black and a blackhead forms. Using a red clay face mask effectively dries out all blackheads and pulls them to the surface, thus removing them gently.

Tighter Pores

Red clay controls the production of sebum and removes excess oils from deep within. Thus the pores shrink in size and gets tighter. Since all impurities like dirt and dead skin cells are eradicated, it unclogs pores and allows them to breathe, and your skin feels a great deal fresher.

Reduces signs of ageing

With age, your skin tends to droop and sag, as the texture loses its firmness. If you neglect the issue, it will become worse and soon the damage spreads further and becomes difficult to combat. Whenever you notice a bit of skin sagging, it is time to sit up and take notice of the problem. A red clay mask restores tightness of the skin and improves elasticity as well.

Lessens Breakouts

No one likes to deal with acne and pimples, especially those filled with pus. Not only do they mar your appearance, but they are extremely painful too. Red clay masks are an effective treatment for acne, as they are immensely beneficial in reducing breakouts, while making blemishes and scars due to pimples fade out gradually.

Smooth skin texture

If your skin has become rough and dull due to exposure to the sun and pollutants, applying red clay regularly can help to restore its smoothness. Your skin feels suppler and softer.

Works for dry skin

While Moroccan red clay mask is aptly suited for oily skin, those with dry skin can use it too. As it regulates production of sebum and oil, it helps to reduce dryness by ensuring natural oils of the skin aren’t stripped off.

Improves Skin Tone

It is common for one to experience imbalances in their skin tone. This is a result of pore melanin production and liver toxicity, amongst other things. One of the secrets to healthy glowing skin is to flush out toxins on a regular basis.

And while it may not be completely possible to achieve the same flawless skin you had many years ago, it is possible to achieve very healthy, beautiful skin with red clay as it pulls out toxins and eliminates them successfully. Not just that, a red clay face mask can help your skin look younger and improve both texture and tone by reducing inflammation and correcting damage caused by free radicals.

It is completely natural

One of the major problems with today’s skin care products is that they are highly toxic. Most skin care products today contain very harsh ingredients. These ingredients like BPA, synthetic fragrances, parabens, phthalates and other unnatural, toxic substances are linked to everything from chronic disease to skin irritation.

Red clay masks are a completely natural way to detoxify, cleanse, purify, exfoliate and beautify your skin without any negative side effects.

Red Clay Mask DIY Recipe

Red Clay Mask Recipe There are numerous ways to prepare face masks using red clay. Here is the most basic red clay face mask recipe:
  • Mix equal parts of clay and water (rose water is a great alternative) till it forms a paste. For an even more intense, purifying mask, replace water with raw apple cider vinegar.
  • Add a few drops of essential oil like lavender, rosemary, chamomile or lemongrass.
  • Apply to a clean face (this is necessary as unclean skin won’t allow the mask to work its magic.
  • Let it dry for 20 minutes. If you have dry skin, you don’t have to keep it on for so long. Just touch to feel if it is dry.
  • Rinse off with warm water.
  • Apply a high-quality, organic moisturiser afterwards to protect the skin and balance sebum production.

It is recommended to use the clay mask once or twice per week for best results. Please don’t be under the misconception that you have to use the mask everyday or up to 4 times a week to achieve the intended effect.

Those with dry skin can go up to 3 times a week, but not more! Overdoing this routine might do more harm than good, so stick to a schedule and watch how your skin becomes healthier with each use.
